Hello, and welcome to my little spot on the interwebs. I got all sorts of stuff here as interests me, check it out!
This website is written by myself, in a combination of raw HTML and CSS, some Javascript, and a good deal of Ruby. In the past it's been implemented in Odin, and Zig: I like to play about with a lot of different languages. For details please see my colophon page.
This is my personal website. For a more corporate website that's basically just a CV, please see gabbott.uk.
If you are in the London area and fancy a cup of coffee and a chat, please e-mail me and we can arrange to meet.
I post about all sorts of things, and mostly just what crosses my mind, or the kinds of things I've been up to (in the form of weeknotes, typically). I also have a couple of hobbies which I'll probably post about, like:
Mandolin
I first picked up the mandolin in November 2024. I find it really enjoyable!
At first I was playing R.E.M's Losing my Religion, and later started playing more classical. I've now joined the London Mandolin Ensemble and Phoenix Mandolins groups and play with them, occasionally doing concerts.
My mandolins are to the right! And for more mandolin stuff and generally music stuff, please see my /music page. I maintain a music of the day page with a new piece (not by me) every day. Please also share your music suggestions, especially if it's classical, folk or metal...
Languages
I like to learn languages. I learnt German starting at about age thirteen, and have got it to the point of more-or-less fluency. (Really, it's dwindled a lot given years of little use, but I can still get by fine!). Then, I started learning Polish and Norwegian in sixth form for about two years. Afterwards I learnt Japanese for about three and a half years. I am currently learning Italian, and playing about with Georgian as well recently.
My ability in all of these languages is likely subpar, but if you speak any of these, please e-mail me and we can chat in your language!
I also have an interest in many other languages like Finnish, Hungarian, Turkish, French, Latin, ... though no time to learn them sadly!
Reading
I write about my the books I've read / am reading here, and might even here and there do reviews!
